What we do

I'm Jane Shaw - it's me that's the marketing part of Shaw Thing. My expertise is in ethical marketing for small businesses and not-for-profits, including the education sector.

My career evolved from environmental journalism and proof reader to practical, hands-on PR and marketing; through to online marketing expertise; and finally wider strategic marketing and branding roles. I've developed a successful niche writing about sustainable living and childhood for magazines, newspapers and online. I've worked and lived internationally, for world renowned universities, small businesses and as a digital nomad. In 2020 I celebrated 13 years as a marketing consultant. I have a degree in journalism studies and postgraduate qualifications in marketing.

I specialise in writing copy that matches the tone of the brand and the style of the audience; I have trained hundreds of people in how to write business communications that reinforce the company's image, and appeal specifically to the target reader.

As a small business owner, I understand what other small businesses need. When I work with small and micro businesses, I often start on one project; before getting involved in a much more strategic project where I end up helping the owner develop a comprehensive, long-term marketing strategy. I like to see results, so I’m not afraid to tell you if I think your phone message is so bad that it will affect your sales!

I’m never going to use jargon. I’m not going to create (or copy) weird phrases to demonstrate my ‘expertise’. Marketing is not a dark art; it’s a business function

I love marketing - but I also like to go to bed knowing that I've done my bit to make the world a better place today. My days of selling wetsuits to make someone else rich are long gone; but if your business helps change behaviours from single-use to reusable; or you help individuals live calmer, happier and less vulnerable lives, then I'll give you my all.
